Five ways beauty sleep really leaves you fresh-faced

‘I need my beauty sleep!’ Sound familiar?

It’s not just sleeping beauty who needs her beauty sleep. We all do, according to world-renowned dermatologist Dr Lancer. As the go-to skin doctor for many of Hollywood’s elite such as Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham, Dr Lancer recognises the importance of resting up in order to put your best face (and skin!) forward.

Soak&Sleep and Dr Lancer dish on the importance of ‘beauty sleep’ with expert tips on how to beautify your skin while catching some Zs!

Get enough sleep. When your body enters the restorative phase of sleep, the skin begins to repair itself. “If you do not allow the body to reach that stage…the skin isn’t given a chance to repair itself and turn over new cells. This is the cause of dull, drab-looking skin,” he says. You should aim for between 6.5 and 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night.

Sleeping position matters. If you’re most comfortable sleeping on your back then you’re in luck! Dr Lancer says sleeping with your face toward the ceiling is best for the body and face. “It allows for the maximum intake of oxygen, as no pillows or sheets can interfere with breathing.”

Power of the pillow. Worried about wrinkles? Resist the urge to bury your face into your pillow. This habit can deepen lines over time leading to more defined creases. If you’re able to resist the urge to dive head first into your pillow, sleep with your face exposed to preserve your lovely skin.

Lovely linens for minimal lines. If you like to sleep on your front be sure your pillowcase is made of a material that will allow your skin to repair itself, allowing it to radiate. “A high thread count, quality cotton or silk case can help prevent wrinkling or lining of the face whilst asleep.” You’ll be maintaining beautiful skin while unwinding in super comfy linens! What’s not to love?!

When to change your case. Yes, this matters! Dr Lancer recommends changing your pillowcase every other night and avoiding synthetic materials. This prevents skin from picking up trapped bacteria and germs, which can cause unwanted skin irritation. And let’s be honest, nothing beats freshly washed linens!

Kill two birds with one stone – achieve great sleep and beautiful skin – by adding these regimes into your nightly sleep routine!
