With so many duvets on the market, all claiming to give you the ‘best night’s sleep’, we understand it can get a little confusing! Not one sleeper is the same, so here at Soak&Sleep we want to make sure that you are using the right one for you, and making the most of your moments of relaxation.
When consulting customers on finding their perfect duvet, we are surprised by how many people are not sleeping well because of various reasons – being too hot, too cold, restless, stressed…the list goes on! Therefore, we have created this guide to help you find the best duvet for whatever the weather, depending on whether you are looking to keep warm or stay cool!
Tog….it’s a funny word isn’t it? Hands up if you can tell us what it means? …Don’t worry, it took us a while to get our head around it too!
Tog is a unit of measurements, which tells you how much heat your duvet will retain. Therefore, the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet.
If you are looking for something light and cooling during the Summer months, or are one of the lucky ones and live in a hotter climate then you should get your hands on a 4.5 tog. If you’re looking for something a little warmer for middling temperatures in Spring & Autumn, then a 9.0 tog is perfect. When the weather turns colder, then throw a 13.5 tog duvet into the mix. Sure to keep you lovely and warm through the bitter winter chill.
An all-seasons is a clever choice for the practical shopper, which gives you three duvets in one, for a perfect night’s sleep 365 days of the year. The pack contains a 4.5 tog for Summer, a 9.0 tog for Autumn, and for Winter there is the opportunity to connect these two together to create a 13.5 tog. Just remember to store your duvets correctly when you’re not using them! We would recommend washing them (under the correct care instructions), and popping in a breathable cotton storage bag.
If you get particularly chilly, or live somewhere that requires you to hibernate when the weather turns, then the Artic 18 tog is the best thing for you!
Top tip for a sleep solution: If you and your partner can’t share the same duvet, why not select your own perfect single? Avoid feeling cold, hot sweaty nights, or duvet hoggers!
When looking for the perfect duvet for anytime of the year, be mindful of the filling, as some are designed to keep you snuggly whereas others are perfect for cooling you down. There are quite a few different assortments, but do not fear, as we are here to help guide you through the available options.
Feather and down
If you are looking for a warm, soft and breathable natural duvet then feather and down may be the one for you.
What is the difference between feathers and down you ask? Well get ready for the science bit! Down clusters are spherical, and trap a lot of heat, whereas a feather is heavy, long and flat. Therefore, a duvet with a high ratio of down is lofty and light – but don’t be fooled, a light down duvet does not always mean a cool duvet. Down keeps you just at the warm by retaining your body heat.
If you like a weighty duvet, then picked a high ratio of feather fill, perfect for keeping snuggly throughout winter.
Wool is fast becoming a great natural sleeping choice, as it is totally unique. If you find yourself getting hot or cold whilst you sleep, then wool is a brilliant temperature regulator. Meaning that when the body gets cold, wool will trap warmth and insulate; when the body is warm, wool removes excess moisture and heat to keep you cool. Also for allergy sufferers, wool is hypoallergenic, eco-friendly and super resilient – making it one of the favourites within the Soak&Sleep office.
Top tip for a sleep solution: If you sleep with a partner that gets warm during the night, then wool is a perfect at keeping you both comfortable.
Silk & Cotton
Natural silk is a luxury filling and has similar properties to wool. Silk may seem delicate, but it is surprisingly hardy. It is also very breathable & hypoallergenic – perfect for keeping cool during summer months, or if you find yourself getting hot whilst you sleep.
Due to its temperature regulating properties, a Winter tog in silk will keep you cosy & comfortable when the weather takes a turn for the worst.
Additionally, Cotton is perfect for warm weather, or if you get hot & sweaty, as it is breathable and light, and has similar qualities to wool & silk.
Synthetic duvets are very popular & affordable, and there are two commonly used fillings: microfibre & hollowfibre. Microfibre could be mistaken for silk fibres as they are very soft to the touch, and when stuffed into a duvet it does a remarkable job at creating a similar sensation to down. So perfect for allergy sufferers, or for those who love the feeling of down, but prefer the synthetic option.
Hollowfibre in comparison, is thicker and slightly wirier, with hollow strands. This creates great structure within the duvet and great loft. Hollowfibre is brilliant value for money and again ideal for allergy sufferers.
Synthetic options are perfect for all year round, with a variety of tog ratings. However, if you find yourself getting too hot, then look to change to a natural option.
Or if you are looking for something a little different why not try our Breathable Synthetic with Tencel – the next generation in duvets!
